His journey led him across continents to
Memphis, Tennessee, where he earned a
Master of Fine Arts from the University of
Memphis. In 1994, a commissioned large-
scale artwork opened the door to an even
greater opportunity—ownership of a
building on South Main Street, which he
transformed into Urevbu Contemporary
(formerly Art Village Gallery). Through his
collaboration with the city, he helped
breathe life into Memphis’ thriving arts
district, fostering a creative hub that
celebrates diversity, culture, and artistic
innovation.

A renowned artist, Urevbu’s work is
instantly recognizable—his bold use of
color, intricate details, and deeply
thought-provoking themes create a visual
language that speaks to the soul.

Renowned Artist

Ephraim Urevbu

Ephraim Urevbu:

A Visionary Artist Redefining
Contemporary Expression

  • Born and raised in Nigeria, Ephraim
Urevbu was shaped by resilience, ambition,
and an unyielding passion for art. As one
of eight children raised by a single mother,
he understood from an early age that
education was his key to success. He
    attended some of Nigeria’s most
    prestigious institutions, culminating in his
studies at Africa’s oldest art college in
    Lagos. Despite societal expectations
    steering him toward conventional career
paths, Urevbu defied the norm, choosing
instead to pursue his artistic calling.

Drawing from his African heritage, his paintings
and mixed-media pieces transcend mere
aesthetics, serving as powerful social
commentaries on identity, inequality, and the
human experience.

His latest collection, “The Naked Truth,” is his
most personal yet—an evocative exploration of
his journey through poverty, cultural barriers,
racism, and a battle with cancer. Through each
stroke of his brush, Urevbu transforms pain into
beauty, struggle into strength, and personal
history into a universal narrative of resilience
and triumph.

As an artist, entrepreneur, and cultural visionary,
Ephraim Urevbu continues to break boundaries,
provoke thought, and inspire generations
through his art—a testament to the power of
following one’s passion against all odds.
